A creative approach to visual journalism for female visual journalists from the African continent.

The Great Rift Valley Lodge, Naivasha, Kenya
January 25-30, 2019

The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF), WAN-IFRA Women in News (WIN) and Native are partnering to hold a media leadership bootcamp for female journalists at The Great Rift Valley Lodge in Naivasha, Kenya from January 25-30, 2019.

As part of the bootcamp, Native will hold a creative lab developed for female visual journalists and image makers from the African continent who would like to develop their skills to create, edit and narrate their visual stories successfully. We will analyze methodologies needed for the research and production of short and long-term visual essays. The workshop is geared towards photographers who work as documentary makers and want to nurture their creative processes, improve storytelling skills and expand their network. The lab will also include sessions on security and self defense.

The creative lab and will be divided into four days and two elements: Inspiration (taking information in) and Action (working, editing and developing your own work as a participant).

Native wants connect its storytellers in a space where we can discuss creative ways to approach stories, develop ideas on how to reclaim spaces that are not representative of us, and learn the best practices on how to use technology, including audio and video, to communicate stories effectively.

Native wants participants to see their work printed, not only on screen. Young photographers have hardly ever edited or seen their work in print, so working with prints is a crucial aspect of the workshop.

We will actively be working with everyone's work by providing feedback on how to edit stories and why. We will discuss local and regional narratives and what works best for which audience. The “Action” element invites participants to look at each other's’ work and critically learn how to read and elaborate visual stories.
